Kennebunk Hoops

The Southern Maine Hoop League

2018 marked the last year of the The Cape Elizabeth winter youth basketball league.  Our program successfully competed in the league for 3 years.  Our first year, we had one team, and this past year we had 3 teams.  It was a great league for our teams to play in.  In 2018, our 5th grade girls team finished in 2nd place, and our 6th grade boys team finished in 3rd place.

The good news is that there is a new winter league that will be starting this year, which will replace the cape league.  Its called the Southern Maine Hoop League based out of Saco, and it will be similar to the cape league structure, schedule, and rules.  Kennebunk Hoops board members have been meeting with the new league to participate in its development and to insure its success.

This new league will be a competitive travel league that is similar to clash soccer, football, and lacrosse in that its town travel teams playing against other towns in a competitive environment.  Our Kennebunk Hoops teams will play teams from all around southern Maine.

The new league will most likely begin play in early November and run through mid-February.  Our teams will begin practicing the first week of November with 2 practices a week leading up to the first game and after that the teams can expect to have 1-2 practices a week.  Games could either be on Saturday or Sunday.  The games will all be in Saco.

These teams also play in a local Thanksgiving jamboree and a holiday tournament in Scarborough, and may also play in a couple tournaments in February and March.

The number of winter league teams we have each year varies depending on the number of competitive players that tryout.

One important difference between our Kennebunk Hoops winter league teams and clash soccer/football/lacrosse is that NOT all players that tryout will make the team.  Each of the teams will have 10 players maximum, so depending on the number of players trying out, there may be players “cut”.  Players that don't make the SMHL teams usually play rec basketball and then tryout in December for one of our "tournament" teams.

Players on this team will NOT play in our RSU 21 local rec basketball program.

For those that choose to try out and play in the winter league, we want to stress to you the time commitment required.  The season runs from late October to end of March, which is a commitment of 5-6 months of basketball.  Between the league and tournaments, they could be playing up to 25-30 games over this time span, plus have 1-2 practices a week.  We want to make sure that everyone understands the time and commitment involved as it’s a long but very fun season.
