Covid-19 Update

Hello Kennebunk Hoops Community-Under normal circumstances, I would be posting about this upcoming season of Kennebunk Hoops filled with details regarding signups, tryouts, and league information, but unfortunately 2020 has proved to be far from normal.

Unlike other community sports programs, we are very much dependent on RSU21 facilities so therefore we must follow the color-coded Health Advisory System that classifies counties’ relative risk of Covid-19 transmission. Below is a breakdown of how each color will impact the Kennebunk Hoops 2020-2021 season:

GREEN
• Access to RSU21 facilities will be extremely limited and we will likely need to reserve gym space at a facility in a nearby town.
• Southern Maine Hoops League (SMHL) will evaluate and let us know if they intend to have a season.
• Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and Arundel Rec basketball will follow RSU21’s lead and evaluate if a program can be run.
• If SMHL season is canceled, Kennebunk Hoops will explore other opportunities such as:
o Renting space at a local gym for skill sessions with a small groups of kids.
o Scheduling additional games with neighboring towns.
o Providing community members with other Southern Maine basketball options such as XL Thunder, AOB, TGK, Seacoast Basketball Academy, etc.

YELLOW
• No access to RSU21 gym space will be permitted. Space is reserved for school activities only.
• It is our understanding that in yellow status, the state safety and social gathering guidelines would not allow the Southern Maine Hoops League to happen.
• In yellow status, it is our understanding there will not be any Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, and Arundel Rec basketball, due to facilities not allowing access to RSU21 gyms.
• Kennebunk Hoops will explore renting space at a local gym for skill sessions and intracommunity scrimmages.

RED
• No access to RSU21 gym space will be permitted.
• No Southern Maine Hoops League.
• No Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, and Arundel Rec basketball.
• Kennebunk Hoops will explore potential virtual options to keep the kids active and engaged with basketball.

Our plan is to monitor the situation closely over the next month and provide you with another update by November 1st and the Board will make a final decision on the direction of the season by December 1st. This decision will be based upon how we are trending as community, county, and state. As much as we are excited to see all of you on a basketball court again, the safety and health of our community members will remain our top priority.
